Viña Santa Marina

Merida, Extremadura, Spain

On this unique place, a terroir winery was created, with small plots planted with native grape varieties and others of French origin. A history of more than 300 years where the Alvear family and their terroir have been intrinsically united and today produce exceptional wines in Viña Santa Marina

History

The Alvear family come from a background of prominent military and naval officers. They have been making wines for centuries including such labels as the Bodegas Alvear in Montilla (Córdoba), established in 1729 and renowned for its excellent “finos” and sweet wines which can only be produced in that area.

In 1999 Viña Santa Marina was founded by Álvaro de Alvear on the Via de la Plata in Extremadura on the site of a previous Roman settlement. His aim was to produce high quality red and white wines with blends of French and native grapes, perfect for this particular terroir.

The estate is located under the protection of an imposing granite mountain, the Sierra de La Moneda, famous for its cave paintings. The estate covers 200 hectares of which 80 hectares are of dense Mediterranean forest that contribute to the uniqueness of its wines.

The Winery - Quality, Tradition and Modernity.

The soil is granitic and sandy clay in composition with areas of abundant pebbles to facilitate drainage. There are currently 36 hectares with an original range of grape varieties: Tempranillo, Montúa, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, Merlot and Viognier to give the wines a distinctive flavour from which we make both careful monovarietal and blending wines. The wine is mainly aged in French wood, although we also use new American oak and this influences and shapes the personality of our wines. The ageing period depends on the type of wine we are making, and ranges between 4 to 16 months. Once bottled, Viña Santa Marina wines continue to mature without oxygen. We say the wine is “finished” in the bottle, in the quiet stillness of the wine cellar.

Many of the wines have won and are winning awards every year as attested in this document
We offer as well our unique Alicena Extra Superior olive oil. It comes  from olives of the Arbequina variety with a soft touch of Carrasqueña and Picual, and obtained only through cold mechanical procedures.

Enotourism and Wine Shop

Since we founded VSM we have aimed to share our love for winemaking with clients and friends.
The outside of the winery is a typical Extremaduran grange, including a large interior courtyard surrounded by spacious porches with a beautiful vantage point.

Wine lovers and the curious have a cosy tasting room with a shop where  wines can be tasted and purchased.

Weddings and Private Events

Two things make our winery unique: its wines and its location at the foot of a beautiful mountain range in the Mediterranean forest. This is why Viña Santa Marina is the place chosen by so many newlyweds to celebrate their wedding.

It is also the perfect place to celebrate any type of business and family event, being the preferred venue for many companies and institutions in the public and private sector.

All events focus on our carefully tended vineyard, the wines, elaboration and ageing processes. Our bodega boasts spacious banqueting halls that can accommodate up to 600 diners, a conference room for 200 people and small, private meeting rooms.

A history of more than 300 years where the Alvear family and their terroirs have been intrinsically united and today they produce exceptional wines in Viña Santa Marina. Although it sounds simple, good wines always come from a good vineyard.
