Schulenburg Estates

Lower Saxony, Germany

Manor Nordsteimke is home to a horse stable, the restaurant “Wildfrisch” and the Yard Boarding Hotel. Manor Bisdorf is the base of the agricultural business and the residence of the family. The former sheep and horse stables here can be used for events. The forestry commission is located in Kaiserwinkel, where rooms for events are rented out, Christmas trees are sold and hunts are organised.

History

The historical development of the property of the Counts von der Schulenburg-Wolfsburg began in 1742 with the marriage of Lieutenant-General Adolf Friedrich von der Schulenburg, royal tutor of Frederick the Great, to a daughter of Gebhard Werner von Bartensleben.

During the Third Reich, the Schulenburg family lost about 1,500 hectares of forest and the Wolfsburg Castle as a result of expropriation, for the purpose of building the Volkswagen car factory and the city of Wolfsburg.  The forest Neumühle (1,300 ha) in today’s Saxony-Anhalt fell victim to Soviet land reform a few years later. Finally, in the 1990s, the family property was extended by the repurchase of a large part of this former Schulenburg forest in Neumühle and by an additional land purchase in Brandenburg.

Today the agricultural department of the Schulenburg business works on 946 hectares of land; the forestry commission comprises a total of 4865 ha in the counties of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg.

The present owner is Count Guenther Graf von der Schulenburg, a business graduate, who took over the responsibility for the agriculture and forestry from his father, Dr. Guenzel Graf von der Schulenburg, in 1998, and has since been continuing a long family tradition. At the same time, he shows a strong interest in the preservation of cultural heritage and the sustainable usage of natural resources, namely with the Bisdorf village renewal project, the Bisdorf biodiversity project and the renovation and expansion of the Nordsteimke Manor.
