500 years of winemaking tradition continues on this estate to this day, an estate packed with history since the Medieval times and located less than an hour from Venice. Castello di Roncade is open not only for its wines but also as a unique guest residence – the perfect location to discover its history as well as the region.
History
Castello di Roncade is one of the most unique examples of living Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy. It is the only pre-Palladian villa to be surrounded by Medieval walls with crenellations and towers. The Castello stands right in the heart of Roncade, a small town in the Veneto countryside between Treviso and Venice.
It sits on the ruins of a tenth century castle given to the Collalto Counts by Emperor Otto II. In the sixteenth century Girolamo Giustinian, a member of the Venetian aristocracy, set out to rebuild the castle which is what we see today.
The villa remained with the Giustinian family for nearly four centuries until the line died out at the end of the nineteenth century.The Castello was sold to Baron Tito Ciani Bassetti, whose dream was to make wine in an area that since Roman times had been part of the Serenissima. His family remain the owners today, continuing the family’s passion for viticulture and winemaking and they produce a high quality wine.
The Castello
The villa, built in 1508 during the Republic of Venice, is open for visits and is one of the most unique examples of surviving Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy. A tour of the Castello includes a fascinating insight into the life of the Venetian nobility, the private chapel, portraits and ageing cellars as well as a wine tour and tasting!
Wine and the Vineyards
Castello di Roncade is located on the countryside between Venice and Treviso, on a large estate full of vineyards. With more than 110 hectares of vineyards, Castello di Roncade produces mouth-watering white wines and full bodied red wines. The estate shop offers a range of fourteen different wines including sparkling, whites and reds.
Villa Giustinian is the flagship wine of Castello di Roncade. It is a classic Bordeaux
blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec, which is aged in French oak barrels for at least two years. A careful selection of only the healthiest grapes from the best vintages allows the wine to improve while further ageing in the bottle.
A visit here includes an introduction to local winemaking, a guided wine tasting and an insight into its ancient history and wines.
Should you wish, you can also visit the new state-of-the-art winery in Mogliano Veneto, close to the Roncade vineyards where wine enthusiasts from all over the world come to buy the wines of Castello di Roncade.
