El Pendolero
Outskirts of Madrid, Spain
El Pendolero is the perfect location for your large wedding or private event. Set in the grounds of this country estate with views of Madrid and Monte El Pardo, this is an event that will be remembered for years to come. The original poster collection is a unique addition to this turn of the century private ‘hotel’.
History
For several centuries the Finca El Pendolero was part of the Royal hunting ground of El Pardo. In 1911, following the purchase of 3 independent plots by Don Gabriel Maura Gamazo and Doña Julia Herrera, the finca came to be what it is today. The main house was erected on the second highest hill, “El Pendolero”, which gave the farm its name. Seven boxes for horses and stables for six work mules were built, since then the horses have been used for guards and walks. The property was fenced off and repopulated with trees. In 1970 the hunting legislation changed and the terrain moved from « vedado » to « coto », a private hunting reserve
El Pendolero lived years of splendor from 1911 to 1931, years in which many personalities of the time attended; diplomats, politicians, actors, etc. The father of the owner, Don Antonio Maura was five times prime minister and Gabriel Maura was also involved in the Royal Academy and government.
Furthermore, during this time Pendolero was enriched with modernist works and furniture and a large library. From 1931 to 1939, the forest was cut down to compulsorily cultivate their lands in the Agrarian Reform and during the Civil War the building, close to the Brunete battlefield, was a field hospital.
From 1939 to 1969 it was once again inhabited by its owners as a recreational place or private “Hotel”. Between 1971 and 1995 the property began to expand its utilities. It is the scene of ten films. In 1995, business meetings, parties and weddings began to be organized in the building and on the terraces. About 10,000 people every year have been able to enjoy the “Hotel”, and the views of this historic estate and its surroundings.

Poster Collection
The Pendolero collection of original early to mid 20th century posters is the result of more than fifteen years of searching in antique dealers, collectors and bidding at auctions around the world. These posters greatly accentuate the charm and personality of this unique house.
Posterism was born with the Industrial Revolution due to the need to sell produce on a large scale. This artistic manifestation is the forerunner of modern design and advertising. Never before had images been captured with the strong contrasts and colors of these striking posters.
The Pendolero house was built in 1911. Due to its large cast iron columns, beams supporting six-meter spans, and the large central glass skylight, this house is an architectural reflection of that Industrial Revolution. The sinuous bars of the windows and the central door have clear influences of “Art Nouveau”. Its spacious halls were designed for the usual celebrations of that time of enormous economic prosperity accompanied by an absolute lack of modesty when it came to displaying large jewels, tiaras, maids, and all kinds of perfectly uniformed servants. A “Belle Epoque” of pomp that will disappear forever after the bloody Bolshevik Revolution of 1918.
The venue for weddings, shows and events in an historic building on the outskirts of Madrid – We welcome you!
