Chateau de Bousval
Belgium (30 mins from Brussels)
A Modern organically certified, biodynamic Winery and a countryman’s dream come true. The Château de Bousval vineyard is an enchanting story: one of a nature lover and his attention to his plot of barren Walloon earth. Hand in hand, man and terroir worked together to achieve renewed richness by planting vines.
History
The estate dates back to the 12th century. The oldest still remaining part of the castle is the round shaped tower dating back to the 16th century when Château de Bousval was owned by one of Margaret of Austria’s butlers.
1879 marked the construction of one of the first greenhouses in Belgium on the estate’s premises. Later, in 1954 Miss Tamines, then owner of the castle, founded a horticultural school in Bousval.
After having passed into the hands of the Solvay family, followed by Jean-Marie Delwart, a passionate biologist who lived here 20 years, in 2004 the Verhaeghe de Naeyer
family started the renovation of the estate including construction of the vineyard, cellars and winery as well as the outbuildings to house the machinery used for the production of wine on the estate. In 2014 and 2015 vines were planted in the grounds of the estate. In October 2016, Michel Verhaeghe de Naeyer and his team of winemakers celebrated their first small harvest followed by the building of the environmentally friendly Chai winery by architect Charly Wittock (Cameleon).
Wines for sale
The creation of a vineyard from futile land has become reality. Through hail storms, frost, hungry wildlife, and a lot of patience, the winery now offers 4 Chardonnay and Pinot Gris wines with wonderfully witty names!
Since October 2016 the 5.2 hectares of vineyard in the grounds of the estate has successfully grown high quality grapes. The vines that are used are 4/5 Chardonnay and 1/5 red Pinot Noir, as well as a few Pinot Gris. 2018 saw 5,000 bottles produced which grew to 25,000 bottles in 2020. Those vines were awarded the organic certification in January 2021.
Select from 4 different wines from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay or Pinot Gris each with its own witty name and illustration. Ange ou Demon, Tour Cru, Gouttes d’O or Petit Gris.
Chateau de Bousval received it’s Organic label in January 2021 and produces in the spirit of biodynamic wines.
