The largest private castle church set high above the wild and romantic Ranna and the Danube valley in Austria is the ideal setting for a romantic wedding, properly rounded off by festivities in the garden hall and the front park. The various rooms are also perfect for seminars and other celebrations.
History
Altenhof Castle was mentioned for the first time in 1196, allegedly built by Wernher von Altinhoven, Minister of the Passau bishops. From 1485 to 1602 the castle was owned by the Herleinsperger family, and since 1602 it has been owned by the Salburg-Falkenstein counts.
In the beginning of the 18th century, the castle chapel was expanded to its current form and is considered the largest private church in Austria. Today’s castle, high above the Rannatal, surrounded by a terraced park, dates from after a major fire in 1724.
Altenhof Castle and the associated Falkenstein Castle ruins with its long history dating back to the 12th century has been the source of material for ballads, legends, stories and occasional, inexplicable apparitions and ghost stories.
There is the escaped falcon and the history of the origins of Schlägl Abbey, the imprisoned knight and his maid ready to make sacrifices, the bloody siege of the water tower, where treachery caused the castle people to die of thirst, or the timeless story of the lord of the castle who listened to the evil tongues in the village and could not contain his curiosity, which shattered his marital happiness.
The charm of the old walls and the green oasis of calm can now also be enjoyed by holiday guests when they rent the stylishly furnished holiday apartments.

Gentle Castle Tourism
For 25 years we have been practicing “gentle castle tourism” for guests from all over the world by renting out holiday apartments. The garden hall, castle church and ancestral hall are now also available for small seminars, weddings and concerts.
We enjoy living in a kind of symbiosis with our guests: they bring life to the castle and we convey that special something: a cocktail from a beautiful location high above the wild and romantic Ranna and the Danube Valley, culture and a pinch of Atmosphere and a touch of Adventure.

Whether in the castle itself or in the famously beautiful surroundings of the castle, there is hardly a leisure wish that is not fulfilled. The offer ranges from tennis courts on the castle grounds, fishing and hunting to golf courses and a wildlife park in the immediate vicinity. The untouched nature is a true holiday paradise for hikers, riders and cyclists. The Danube also offers a wide range of entertainment just 3 km away.
In addition to the stylish furnishings, all apartments have an open fireplace or tiled stove and access to the private park. Short-term or long-term arrangements are possible for all apartments.

Flowers have always been important to us. They give you sunny freshness and warmth. So it is no wonder that Heinrich Graf Salburg’s famous orchid cultivation continues today as a palace gardening business.
Gardener and florist Manfred Großhaupt and his team enchant with their artistic creations, especially in the field of wedding floristry.
